Food Storage: My New Years Resolution

By Chef Danielle February 10th, 2010

foodstorage1Granted I am a little behind on this but I have made my resolution.  I decided I really needed to work on having an adequate and varied Food Storage for my family.  I truly believe that everyone should store enough food in there home to provide for their family in any and all emergencies no matter the size.

Small:  I spent this months whole grocery budget at William Sonoma because I really needed new knives, a Breville Dual-Disc Juice Extrator, and a Panini Press.
Large: My family finds itself with now source of income because my husbands company went under.
Ginormous:  A natural disaster hits and has left us without power and water for an unforseen amount of time.

So having set a goal for myself I buckled down and did a little research.  These are the things I decided to focus on.

1. Build a supply of food that is part of your daily diet.  This can be done very easily buy simply buying extra of the things you buy anyway.  Buy a few extra bags of pasta, some extra cans of fruit, and some extra Dream Dinners.  Wherever you start make sure you have a good rotation system so that you use your food storage and replace it on a regular basis.

2. Mix shelf stable ingredients with other ingredients.  Remember that as you build your food storage slowly you are teaching yourself how to use it in an emergency.  You don’t want to have to learn everything when you are stressed or depressed from whatever the situation.  Make sure using your food storage is second nature.

3. Most important start small and build consistantly.  We aren’t made of money and I for one dont want to devote all my life savings to food storage.  It is important to decide how much you can realalistically build your supply every week, month, etc…  Set a goal and stick to it.  My goal is to increase my families supply one week at a time.  Each month I will purchase enough extra to feed my family for one week and make sure that I have all our nutritional needs covered.  That is to say I won’t just purchase 50 lbs of rice and call it good.

Wish me luck with my new endevor.  And I will try and remember to keep you posted.

  1. Pure Dehydrated Foods Says:

I have been looking for blogs the incorporate recipes that use dehydrated vegetables in everday cooking. Since me and my husband live in an area that is affected by hurricanes there are times when we have to live eating our food storage. Food storage is good but I have been trying to find recipes that help us so we aren’t always eating the exact same thing. Thanks for your great post!
