Family Conversation Starters

By Chef Danielle October 6th, 2009

If you didn’t already know, Dream Dinners is a franchise and we have stores all over the nation.  Dream Dinners recently launched a BLOG,  and I read this great post that had ideas of how to start conversations with your family.  Here are the ideas that Stacey Seybold Hiller, M.S.,CCC-SLP, Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist and 0wner, Dream Dinners of Indianapolis, IN gave.

  • What is one thing you couldn’t live without?
  • What cartoon character would you most like to be?  Why?
  • What is the hardest/best thing about being ___ years old?
  • Describe your all-time best day ever.
  • What would be the worst job/profession to have?
  • What should a parent do when a child doesn’t listen?
  • Where would be the best place in the whole world to take a family vacation?
  • Would you rather dive off a huge cliff, or give a book report in front of the whole school?
  •

I love sitting around the table talking about everything and nothing.  My extended family gets together at my mothers house once a month and we always seem to jump from topic to topic and most people (including my husband) have a hard time keeping up.  When we go to his parents house it is a little calmer and more organized conversation.  I  remember the first time I had dinner with hia family and we were newly dating we played “Two Truths and a Lie”  where eveyone at the table says 2 things about themselves that are true and one thing that is not.  It is a great way to get to know new things about people.  Even now, 5 years later, we still talk about that dinner and the things people said.

I definately recomend finding a way to get the people you love most talking and even if you don’t have to force conversation sometimes its fun to just try something new.

With the busy schedules each of our family members keep, dinnertime is the only time we really get to spend together during the work week. These are great suggestions. I just copied them to a note on my iPhone so that they will be in my pocket and handy when we sit down at the table. Thanks for the useful tip.
