Freezer Burn can Really Sting your Wallet

I just read a great article in the Daily Herald about Savvy Shopping Tips.   It was about how Being Organized can Save.

Here were her few simple and free ideas that will save time, save money, and save headaches – which is what we’re all about!!

  • Organize your freezer so that the items you use most are on the top shelves
  • keep your food separated, with similar items together, so you easily can see what needs to be restocked and what doesn’t
  • having a lot of freezer space can save big because then you can buy in bulk and freeze meals for later use

I couldn’t agree with her more! Using freezer space well will prevent you from finding those scary itmes that you haven’t seen in months … or years!  And even better, our guests don’t need an outside freezer because even though “you are buying in bulk” with Dream Dinners and freezing your meals, you aren’t making the same dinner 6-12 times so you use all the ingredients you just bought.  Instead you are getting 6-12 different dinners because you are sharing all your ingredients with families around you! Yeah!

    You are so, so right.

The other day I pulled out a bunch of stuff from my freezer, and couldn’t even identify it! Yikes! All had to be thrown out!

Thanks for the great reminders to get organized with your food!

I have a non-defrostable freezer, as it keeps foods colder and fresher for longer periods. A great tip is to have every space occupied in your freezer. If you have an empty space, put a box filled with newspapers, or better yet, a clean milk carton filled 90% (to allow for expansion) with water. This will save on energy costs~

Frieda, Thanks so much for the great tip. I especially like the box of newspapers idea.
