Charred Pan, by Jean

By Jean August 7th, 2009

Oh no! Let’s say hypothetically, someone went to steam some carrots and then her 1 and 2 year old started fighting with each other over who gets to sweep the floor.  Then — a couple time outs later — you come to find that you have run out of water and now the bottom of your pan is ruined?

After trying to remove the charred food for 10 minutes with a metal scrubber, I am still left with this:

Charred Pan!?!

Just in case, one of you get called away with mom duty and leave a boiling pan of food on your stove and end up with a nasty mess to clean - here’s what you can do:

step 1: fill the pot with soapy water (just a squirt of dish soap) and simmer for 10 minutes.  then let soak while you do the rest of the dishes (20 min).

step 2: clean off all unwanted charring with a wooden spoon

Then your pan should be as good as new!

I have heard that if this doesn’t work, if you make a thick cold paste with baking soda and water, you can let it sit over night and then simmer again in the morning (fill pan up without rinsing the baking soda) to remove unwanted stains on pans as well.

After reading this post by Jean I decided that the following tip needed to be shared with everyone. #ChefsTip: 3 marbles in the bottom of a double-boiler will rattle when the water gets low before a pan scorches or burns. This tip applies when steaming as well as long as you use a metal steamer insert or metal strainer. This is a link for the one I have and its only $9 http://bit.ly/4fer1P
